First Families Day and Family History Month in New Albany

First Families Day and Family History Month in New Albany

City of New Albany Mayor Jeff Gahan has issued a dual proclamation declaring October 3, 2019 “First Families of Floyd, Clark, and Harrison Counties of Indiana Day” and October 2019 “Family History Month” in New Albany. First Families is a Southern Indiana Genealogical Society (SIGS) initiative that identifies early tri-county pioneers and their direct descendants and preserves those families’ histories. New Albany is one of several U.S. cities to formally observe Family History Month in October.

Mayor Gahan stated, “In this Floyd County Bicentennial year, I am pleased to commend the Southern Indiana Genealogical Society for bringing attention to the rich heritage of our region. Citizens are encouraged to remember, research, and share their family histories always--and particularly this October—Family History Month in New Albany.”

The public is invited to attend the official presentation of the proclamation at the annual “Hoosier History and Heritage Celebration” on October 3. A drop-in pioneer social will be held from 6 to 7 PM at the Floyd County 4-H Fairgrounds Newlin Hall. There will be local history and First Families displays and music by Indian Creek Bluegrass Band. Genealogists, historians, and reenactors will attend. Light refreshments will be served. Attendees are welcome to dress as pioneers.

At 7 PM the Louisville (KY) Sons of the American Revolution Memorial Color Guard will open the formal program. Mayor Gahan will present the proclamation. The 2019 applicants with proven direct descent from ancestors in the area before 1841 will receive First Families certificates. Guest speaker Melissa Wiseheart, Indiana History Librarian at the Floyd County Library, will tell about the early history of Floyd, Clark and Harrison Counties.

The First Families Project is co-sponsored by SIGS and the Floyd County Public Library Indiana Room. For more information about First Families or the Celebration, please visit sigsweb.org or call Donna Kepley Foster at 812-923-3492.
