Free Computer Classes

August 2018 Computer Classes at Floyd County Library

Featuring Selected Daytime Classes  

Monthly computer classes at the Floyd County Library are taught by knowledgeable Library staff members. Since our staff instructors all have different areas of expertise, students get to enjoy not only a variety of topics, but a variety of fun and friendly instructors as well. In addition to classes on Microsoft Word and Excel, we are pleased this month to offer two new classes, “Cellphone Photography” and “Google Suite for Beginners”. Registration is required, and class size is currently 10 students. To register for any of the following free classes, please visit the Customer Service Desk or call 812-949-3522. Computer classes are held in the Gallery Room, located on the lower level of the Library across from the elevator.

Beginner Word

Thursday, August 2, 10:30 AM-12:00 PM

Come learn the very basics of Microsoft Word! Our instructor will cover how to open Word, create, edit and save a document, and enter and change your text, as well as changing your margins and paragraphs and making lists. Once you have created your document, you will learn the steps to print it out.

Beginner Excel

Tuesday, August 7, 6:00-7:30 PM

In this class you will learn the basics of Excel, including an overview of the beginning functions of Excel. You will learn how to open, create and save an Excel document, get a layout of the different tools, and find out the basic spreadsheet concepts and how to do some beginning data entry and formatting.

Intermediate Word

Thursday, August 9, 10:30 AM-12:00 PM

Build on what you learned in Beginner Word in this informative class. You will learn how to make and manipulate a table, how to create documents that use photos and graphics, and how to use some of the different templates that Word has available. Lastly, you will learn various formatting tools. 

Intermediate Excel

Tuesday, August 14, 6:00-7:30 PM

This class will build on what you learned in Beginner Excel, delving deeper into the concepts of Excel and its formatting. In addition, you will focus more on finishing your worksheet and how to utilize cell references between worksheets. Lastly, the instructor will cover conditional formatting and formulas that use cell references and basic mathematical calculations.

Scams, Viruses and Identity Theft, Oh My!

Have you ever seen a warning on your computer and been unsure what to do? Or, have you heard a story from a friend who got pulled into an Internet scam and lost money? Even if these examples have never happened to you, maybe you are just curious about what to do in one of these situations. Come to this class and find out!

Facebook 101

This class is for those who have just taken the first steps onto Facebook or those who may be interested but are unsure what to do/what it is about. Come to class and let our instructor tell you what they know about this social media platform!

Cellphone Photography

Tuesday, August 21, 6:00-7:30 PM
Do you have a new cellphone and just aren’t sure how to work your camera, or have you had your phone for a while but never mastered the technique of taking a picture? This class is meant for you! We will cover the basics of taking pictures with your cellphone, including how to open the camera and where your pictures go when you take them. We will also cover basic photo editing such as filters and some free apps to use for editing photos. 

Google Suite for Beginners

Are you interested in an alternative to the Microsoft Office Suite but aren’t sure where to turn? This class will teach you the basics of Google Suite, which includes Google Docs, Google Drive, and Google Sites as well as several different options for communication. Our instructor will give you an overview of these resources and how to utilize them to benefit you most.
