Free Computer Class

Monthly computer classes at the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library are taught by knowledgeable Library staff members. Since our staff instructors all have different areas of expertise, students get to enjoy not only a variety of topics, but a variety of fun and friendly instructors as well. In addition to classes on Microsoft Word and Excel, we are pleased to offer a new class on creating professional presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint. Registration is required, and class size is currently 10 students. To register for any of the following free classes, please visit the Customer Service Desk or call 812-949-3522. Unless otherwise noted, computer classes are held in the Gallery Room, located on the lower level of the Library, right across from the elevator.

Computer 101 (two sessions offered)

Tuesday, May 8, 6:00-7:30 PM

In this class, you will learn the basics of computers. We will briefly cover the terms 'hardware' and 'software'. You will get an understanding of the different types and parts of computers and how to perform essential functions.

Beginner Word

Thursday, May 3, 10:00-11:30 AM

Come learn the very basics of Microsoft Word! Our instructor will cover how to open Word, create, edit and save a document, and enter and change your text, as well as changing your margins and paragraphs and making lists. Once you have created your document, you will learn the steps to print it out.

 

Beginner Excel (two sessions offered)

In this class you will learn the basics of Excel, including an overview of the beginning functions of Excel. You will learn how to open, create and save an Excel document, get a layout of the different tools, and find out the basic spreadsheet concepts and how to do some beginning data entry and formatting.

 

Intermediate Word A

Thursday, May 17, 10:00-11:30 AM

Build on what you learned in Beginner Word in the first of a two session class. Participants will learn how to use the various formatting tools, and how to insert photos and graphics.

 

Intermediate Excel

Monday, May 21, 6:00-7:30 PM

This class will build on what you learned in Beginner Excel, delving deeper into the concepts of Excel and its formatting. In addition, you will focus more on finishing your worksheet as well as how to utilize cell references between worksheets. Lastly, the instructor will cover conditional formatting and formulas that use cell references and basic mathematical calculations.

Intermediate Word B

Tuesday, May 22, 10:00-11:30 AM

Following up on Intermediate Word A, participants will continue practicing what they have learned so far, and new skills covered will include how to insert tables and text boxes.

Professional Presentations

Wednesday, May 23, 6:00-7:30 PM

Come learn the basics of Microsoft PowerPoint and how to use it to make a professional presentation. In this class you will learn how to create a PowerPoint document, how to choose a style, and how to import media, and receive some tips on how to make your presentation the best it can be!

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

Have you recently received a new tablet and don’t know how to set up your email? Or maybe a new smartphone and need help installing apps? BYOD (or Bring Your Own Device) Class gives patrons an opportunity to discuss, in an informal setting, any questions regarding their devices. When signing up, please provide as much detail about your device and questions you have as possible (example, what kind of device is it, the brand, the operating system, etc.) so we can help as quickly as possible.
